WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene)

Clean water and hygiene for learning, health, and dignity
The WASH program is at the heart of ACCEC’s mission to create healthy, safe, and inclusive
learning environments. We work primarily with schools as strategic entry points into wider
communities to ensure consistent access to safe water, adequate sanitation, and lifelong
hygiene habits.
Core components:
Water access and safety
Borehole construction and rehabilitation provide reliable water sources for schools and their
surrounding communities. We install rainwater harvesting systems with gutters and tanks to
store water for daily use and promote water treatment solutions such as ceramic filters,
chlorination, and solar disinfection (SODIS) to make water safe for drinking.
Sanitation infrastructure.
We construct and upgrade gender-segregated, disability-friendly toilets with hand washing
points in schools. We also establish changing rooms for girls to support menstrual hygiene and
reduce absenteeism, and support communities in improving household sanitation.
Hygiene promotion.
We promote hand washing with soap at all critical times. School WASH clubs lead hygiene
efforts through songs, dramas, and peer training. Community members benefit from behavior
change campaigns through radio, posters, and household visits.
Menstrual hygiene management (MHM)
We provide reusable sanitary pad kits, create private changing spaces, and engage girls, boys,
and teachers in open conversations to remove stigma and promote confidence.
Impact vision:
We envision every school with clean water, safe sanitation, and empowered children who take
these life-saving habits into their homes and communities.
